Understanding pigmentation and melasma

Sun exposure and hormones both matter. Treatment is slower than most people expect.

Not all dark patches are the same

Post-acne marks, melasma, and sun-induced pigmentation look similar but respond to different treatments. Getting the diagnosis right matters more than the strength of the cream.

Sun protection is the treatment

Without daily sun protection, most pigmentation treatment stalls or reverses. This is the single change with the largest effect.

Expect months, not weeks

  • Improvement is usually visible after eight to twelve weeks
  • Maintenance matters, melasma in particular tends to recur
  • Aggressive shortcuts often cause rebound darkening
